Sparked by the memory of the man named Jim Thompson, who created the world-famous silk company that carries his name, Spirit Jim Thompson is a new restaurant and bar located in the heart of Bangkok. Its well-preserved tropical garden with mature trees, and the covered patio, offer guests a welcome sense of serenity within the urban jungle of Bangkok. Inside the restaurant and bar, the woodwork and welcoming décor, including furnishings from the silk company, altogether reflect his inimitable eye for refined sophistication in a tropical context. The custom-made porcelain features a pattern called Shadows, created by designer Paul Heredia who was moved by the shadows in the gardens of Jim Thompson’s House. His subtle leaf patterns are reproduced on the plates, while a peek at their underside reveals more garden-inspired colourful designs – an elegant, yet playful, attention to detail. The whole experience for patrons of Spirit is carefully curated i.e. the music, the floor-to-ceiling windows giving a nice play of light and shadow inside and out, the reflections of the stainless steel panels in the ceiling, the use of tropical woods, the pivoting panels covered in silks from the Jim Thompson collection that reveal, or conceal, different spaces in the dining room, and the use of fragments of ceramic and stone. The menu of Spirit reflects Jim Thompson’s adventurous spirit and includes flavours from around Southeast Asia that were key to his tropical journey of discovery. Iconic dishes from Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia work happily with Thai specialities from each region of Thailand, and altogether offer plenty of exotic tastes for diners' enjoyment. They embody the variety of tastes and aromas that Jim Thompson would have encountered as he travelled around the kingdom. Many ingredients are sourced directly from the Jim Thompson Farm in Nakhon Ratchasima, in north-eastern Thailand. Elegance and discernment were the hallmarks of a social evening hosted by the man at his residence, and this is seen in the cuisine at Spirit. Chef Montri Virojnvechapant has created a gastronomic menu that showcases refined Thai flavours. The Thai recipes he meticulously researched for it are authentic and, for the most part, forgotten ones, but adapted with modern culinary innovation and presentation to make them shine all the more. / ISSUE_23 21 (1) Finest touch at Spirit Jim Thompson (2) Meing Kham Nam Tan Grob. You will likely see the good-looking couple who just lost their first child, the elderly lady with a husband in the final stage of lung cancer, the man who just received the news that he needs a liver transplant, and the doctor who will miss her young daughter’s birthday party because a patient needs urgent surgery. There are many variations of such life situations, many more complex than you can imagine./ ISSUE_23 25 Walking around a hospital, we normally make opinions – often unintentionally – of people in situations without knowing their stories or realising the deep impact on their lives. Have you ever been irritated waiting for the doctor a long time, or been annoyed by a person who bumped into you without saying sorry? That doctor could be late because of he just finished giving some bad news to the family of another patient. That person who bumped into you was possibly in shock about losing someone in her family. Unfortunately, the special glasses we mentioned before do not exist and we cannot see other peoples’ thoughts. Humans do, however, have the emotional skill called empathy. Technology plays a very important role in all industries, including medicine. You may experience its replacement of human interaction from your first step walking through an automated door. Pulling out a visitor’s ticket from a queuing kiosk, getting measured for your weight or blood pressure by a machine and being called to see your doctor via a number flashing on a digital screen are just a few simple examples that show how much technology is used in a hospital. The more automation is used, the less human interaction you will encounter and there is a general concern that artificial intelligence will be eliminating more and more jobs in the healthcare industry. Medical experts believe that this is unlikely, however, since healing patients does not only require medical treatment but also emotional connection – and only humans (or animals) can provide these. / ISSUE_23 26 YOUR HEALTHY BRAIN In the know According to Dr. David Jeffrey, Honorary Lecturer in Palliative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, U.K., doctors should have empathy for their patients rather than sympathy or compassion. These three words tend to be used interchangeably, but they are different. Having empathy means imagining to be a specific person undergoing a specific experience or, in What is the difference between empathy, sympathy, and compassion? other words, understanding them as themselves. In contrast, having sympathy means imagining what it would be like if you are in another person’s situation, and if a doctor has sympathy instead of empathy, he might experience his own distress and burn out. Having compassion means being aware of other’s suffering, but not necessarily to understand their feelings. What are the qualities of a good doctor? The top GPA score in medical school, the highest IQ score, the best training from a highly ranked programme, or being empathetic? Medical knowledge and skills are clearly crucial to become a successful health professional, but the doctor’s interpersonal skills are also important. Research has shown that trust, interpersonal skills and the empathy of a physician have a significant impact on the doctor-patient relationship, patient satisfaction and treatment outcome. Empathy is a soft skill which makes patients feel comfortable with their doctor. It is shown by having a genuine interest in a patient’s health problem, patient listening, and efforts made to understand a patient. Additionally, providing a clear description of the disease and medicine to a patient will result in stronger cooperation during recovery, with better results. Evidence shows that patients of a doctor who has a high empathy score will control their levels of sugar and cholesterol better compared to patients of a doctor who has a lower empathy score. Another study also has shown a shorter period and less severity of common colds in patients of doctors who have higher empathy scores compared to other groups. Empathy thus has a significant effect on a patient’s health and the success of their medical treatment, and it is taught as part of medical curriculums and promoted in medical training. Empathy can be measured by using the Thomas Jefferson Scale of Empathy, which was developed at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and is five-item questionnaire for measuring patient’s perceptions of their physician’s empathic engagement. It is available in three versions for different users i.e. medical students, health professionals, and health profession students. The Thomas Jefferson Scale of Empathy was translated into 56 languages or dialects, and is used in 85 countries, including Thailand. Even though feelings are not an organ of the human body, it makes us being human and illnesses cannot be cured without empathy and emotional support.YOUR HEALTHY BODY Longevity EMPATHY YOURSELVES BY TAKE CARE NATURAL KILLER CELL (NK CELL) Immune system is one of body functions that prevent viruses, bacteria, and other germs that cause human infections. It also prevents and get rids of the development of abnormal cells such as cancer cells./ ISSUE_23 29 The immune system is composed of chemicals produced within a body, namely, white blood cells. These cells are produced from bone marrow and released into the blood system and tissues to perform surveillance for infections. NK Cell (Natural Killer Cell) is another type of white blood cells which are present within a body and are found only 15% out of overall lymphocytes 1 . They, however, play an important role in destroying virus-infected and cancer cells without antigen stimulation. Therefore, NK cells are crucial and regarded as the beginning level of innate immune system in finding and destroying cancer cells at initial stage and controls virus infections 2 . According to the studies, NK cells decline in performance as the body ages. This correlates with the fact that the incidence of cancer increases as the body ages 3-7 . In addition to age, there also are other factors that weaken NK cells. For example: Chronic stress: when the body suffers from stress chronically, stress hormone will weaken immune system and put the body at risk of infection 11 . Unhealthy food consumption; for example, highly sugary or fatty foods and insufficient consumption of vegetables will affect immune system functioning within the body as it lacks sufficient minerals and vitamins to strengthen immune system 10 . Lack of exercise, as it is an effective way to enhance immune system functioning 9 . Insufficient rest, less than 8-hour sleep 8 .Next >
