One of the important causes of this disease is the condition in which bad cholesterol, known as LDL, binds on to the blood vessels, causing circulation problem which leads to arterial blockage, ischemic heart disease and can lead to heart failure or heart attack. So how to take care of yourself to prevent risk factors that cause cardiovascular disease can be done in many ways, for example, • Avoid eating fatty food. • Eat fruits and vegetables that provide anti-free radicals, inhibit vascular inflammation. • Take plan sterols, which are natural extracts, inhibit the cholesterol absorption into the bloodstream. • Exercise regularly, etc. WHAT ARE PLANT STEROLS? They are natural constituent of plants, found in abundant in nuts, whole grains and plant based oils. The US National Institutes of Health recommends as one to be used in people with high levels of LDL as the plant sterols helps reduce cholesterol absorption into blood stream, thus lower the level of cholesterol and the overall cholesterol level as well as adjusting the ratio of LDL and HDL to be in a desirable level. These have been categorised into the following five groups: Group I: substances that are carcinogenic to humans, which includes cigarettes, asbestos and alcohols. Group II A: substances that probably cause cancer, such as red meats. Group II B: substances that could possibly cause cancer. Group III: substances that are not classifiable as causes of cancer. Group IV: substances that probably does not cause cancer. YOUR HEALTHY BODY Health guide A GUIDE FOR MEAT-LOVERS TO STAYING HEALTHY In 2015 The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the inter-governmental agency of World Health Organization (WHO), cautioned that high consumption of red meat and processed meat is associated with a higher occurrence of cancer. Their research showed that carcinogens such as N-nitroso, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and Heterocyclic aromatic amine are produced during the processing of meat and that, aside from detrimential health effects, these substances pollute the air as well./ ISSUE_19 23 The ratio of organ-specific cancers occurring from each cause was reported as well. The report indicates that 86% of patients with lung cancer are caused by cigarette-smoking, while 21% of patients with colonic carcinoma have a habit of consuming red meats and processed meats regularly. Cigarette-smoking and red or processed meats consumption are also the causes of cancer in other organs by 19% and 3% respectively. Red meats are filled with beneficial minerals like iron, zinc and vitamin B12, however research points out that a daily intake of 100 grams (or 6 tablespoons) of red meat will increase the risk of colonic carcinoma by 17%. Consuming 50 grams of processed meat, or the equivalent of two sausages a day, will increase the risk of the same disease by 18%. It is conclusive therefore that consumption of a large amount of red and processed meats will boost the risk of colonic carcinoma. However, the WHO recommends that everyone should consume a variety of types of foods in the appropriate portions and so there is no need to stop having red meat, but that there is a need to limit its amount and a stronger need to avoid processed meats. Eating large portions of vegetables and fruits is recommended, as well as regular exercise workouts. 34,000 50,000 200,000 600,000 1,000,000 After reviewing research by 22 experts from 10 different countries, here are some of the interesting conclusions: Red meat refers to mammal meat such as beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horsemeat and goat meat. They are categorised in Group II A – the ones that probably cause cancer, especially colonic carcinoma. Processed meat is categorized in Group I i.e. those that cause cancer, equivalent to cigarettes and asbestos. Raw meats are processed to become more flavourful, or preserved by marinating, curing, smoking or adding salt,. These include bacon, sausage, salted and sweetened meat, ham and canned meat. The WHO provided the number of deaths globally caused by cancer by the above different categories as follows: Cause of Cancer Number of Deaths Processed meat consumption Red meat consumption in a large amount Polluted air Alcoholic drink consumption Cigarette-smokingYOUR HEALTHY BODY Health guide 1. One can start running in almost any surroundings at any time of day, with just a pair of shoes. Many runners become enthusiastic and inspired enough to join races on a regular basis, and there are many stories of people who transformed themselves from a non-athletic person into a proud marathon runner. Unfortunately running injuries commonly strike those who over-train, and there are many cases around the world of heart attack or sudden death during marathons. The causes of those tragic events, and how to prevent them, remain intriguing cases for cardiologists. To prevent running injuries and other health issues when you put on your running shoes, remind yourself to listen to your body and to learn to stop if your body tells you so. RUNNING FOR A BEGINNER There are many reasons why running becomes addictive. Its benefits are many, such as improvement of health, reshaping of your body, trimming weight, improving sleep, reducing anxiety, calming your mind, and making you feel accomplished after a good run. In other words, running gives benefits to both your physical and mental states. Even though running is as easy as putting on a pair of shoes and taking a step, it’s important to take steps to prevent yourself from running injuries. Here are tips that every beginner should know: HOW MUCH RUNNING IS RIGHT FOR YOU? If you have never run before, or played any sports that involve running, you should start with brisk walking or interval-walking, and then try running for 20-30 minutes to see how your body reacts. Once your body is familiarised with running, you can gradually increase the intensity and duration of your run. The 10 Percent Rule can be applied to help your body adjust itself smoothly. Experts recommend running only 3-4 days a week to allow your body to also have recovery time and to become stronger in a sustainable manner. WHAT IS THE 10 PERCENT RULE? The Ten Percent Rule is a proven principle in running that states people should not increase their weekly running distance by more than 10% from the prior week. This rule will prevent you from getting injuries from running too much, or increasing your training program too quickly. Since your body needs both time and practice to get stronger and fitter in a sustainable manner, slow-but-sure is the secret of success for running. / ISSUE_19 28 YOUR HEALTHY MIND Cover story In addition to using the Ten Percent Rule, you can improve your running performance by using the Heart Rate Zones. Your heart rate provides objective data about your exercise intensity. In general, the higher your heart rate, the more intense the exercise. Heart Rate Zones are divided into five levels, with Zone 1 being the lightest intensity and Zone 5 being the hardest intensity. You can get diverse benefits from training within each Heart Rate Zone, thus your training program should include workouts of different intensity. CALCULATING YOUR HEART RATE ZONE There are different ways to find your Heart Rate Zones. One of the simplest ways is to find them as percentages of your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR). The easy method to find your MHR is to subtract your age from 220. The resulting number is the maximum recommended heartbeats/minute for your age, but note that this does not take your individual fitness level into consideration – which could make a difference of 10-20 heartbeats/minute. The most accurate way to check your appropriate MHR is to undergo an exercise tolerance or stress test under the supervision of a physician. You can also find your personal heart rate zones using free Heart Rate Zone Calculator apps, which are available online. Heart Rate Zone 1 Heart Rate Zone 2 Heart Rate Zone 3 Heart Rate Zone 4 Heart Rate Zone 5 Very light, low intensity Light Moderate Hard Maximum A sprint. Complete overload after 30 seconds. Start with a 5K fun run, exceed that with a 10K mini-marathon, follow that with a half-marathon, and then go all the way with a marathon. A long run is exciting, but too much running can unexpectedly become detrimental. The death of Micah True, a famous marathon fanatic, is a wake-up call about the danger of excessive endurance exercise. An autopsy of his heart showed an enlarged and scarred heart that revealed that his death was caused by an irregular heartbeat. Running a marathon is extremely challenging and also has risks due to the strain you put on your heart and body. During a marathon, the heart works a lot harder than at its normal rate. A middle- aged amateur marathoner’s heart, for example, will need to pump blood as much as 4-5 times over its normal volume, continuously for two-four hours. Such prolonged phases of stress during marathons will result in thicker heart walls, more dilation and scars. The hearts of many marathon runners were found to be stiffening, which is a factor of heart failure. With more and more cases of heart attack, or sudden death, in marathon runners being reported (which could be in line with the rising number of runners around the world), cardiologists suggest that we should not assume that exercise is always good for heart health, and that people remember that excessive exercise can become harmful. In addition, it’s not only regular exercise that impacts your heart health, as your family history and your lifestyle have a tremendous impact. Even if you are an experienced runner, do not ignore any signs of cardiovascular disease such as chest pain, pain on your shoulders or arms, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, or the less-frequently- experienced neck or jaw pain. You should seek medical advice immediately if any of these occur. Last, but not least, the rule of moderation is the key to healthy exercise.Next >
