People are striving for physical strength and will do all it takes to enhance it, as reflected in the current enthusiastic sports trends that include gym work, biking, jogging, running and training for triathlons. Little are the public aware that overdoing it, or getting off on the wrong start, can lead to more harm than benefits. This issue of Health Brings Wealth therefore presents the ‘good’ foundations for all exercise norms. Taking your workout to another level, we also touch upon the medical field of Sports Medicine to ensure that you will gain the maximum benefits of keeping fit. DR. A new study finds that you can build strength in just 13 minutes with a single, brief set of each exercise performed at high intensity. Published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the study looked at 34 men who each participated in one of three exercise routines. All three groups performed the same seven exercises, and they all performed 8-12 reps of each. The first group, however, did just one set for a total of 13 minutes, the second group did two sets for a total of 40 minutes and the third group did three sets for a total of 70 minutes. The only gain was muscle mass, and the participants who stopped after 13 minutes gained as much strength as the other two groups. The only deterrent could be that the weights used need to be heavy enough to fatigue you i.e. for you to reach the point where you physically cannot do any more. TEAM SPORTS CAN HELP YOU LIVE LONGER A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that adults who reported frequently participation in team sports such as tennis or soccer lived longer than people who were sedentary and/or took part in solitary activities such as jogging, swimming and cycling. The findings come after 25 years of study, and the researchers found that tennis was associated with an extra 9.7 years of life, badminton with an extra 6.2 years, and soccer with an extra five years But increasing life spans shortened with solo sports e.g. an extra 3.7 years with cycling and an extra 3.2 years with running. For both mental and physical well-being and longevity, it was concluded, social connections are probably the single- most important feature of a long, healthy and happy life.
