The most frequent remark about why is: “Easy to get around, fun shopping, lots of tasty food”. The cherry on top that draws visitors back to Taiwan is the convenience of getting around by themselves without needing to depend on a tour agency, even though there may be a language barrier. Commuting within Taiwan is also easy with its mass transportation options including five MRT systems which connect many of the worthiest places to visit, especially in cities like Taipei, Kaohsiung and Tainan. Taiwan provides opportunities for shopping sprees so tempting that shopaholics who usually love Japan or Hong Kong for retail therapy may change their minds! Ximending is an all- time favourite shopping hub, while Gongguan is known for reasonable brand-name goods. Shida Night Market, located close to National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal ONE MORE TIME: University, is still open after dusk with plenty of trendy apparel, cute gift shops and economical street food available to satisfy each pocket. For clothes in bulk, Wufenpu is the place to head to with its vibe that is similar to Pratunam in Bangkok. The largest wholesale market in Taiwan, Wufenpu is open from noon to midnight. Do note that Mondays are reserved for wholesalers only. As for Taiwanese food, the diversity is highly tantalising and ranges from Michelin-starred restaurants to astonishing street food at night markets, mala shabu, and bubble tea as good as it gets for a mere TWD 45 (USD 1.50). One of the highlights of every trip is Shilin Night Market, which features separate food and shopping zones and is considered to be the biggest and the best of night markets. Raohe Night Market however, located about one kilometre away, is one of the oldest and also worth visiting for its authentic dishes such as baked Fuzhou black pepper buns, pork rib herbal soup, oyster vermicelli at Dong Fa Hao, braised dishes at A Kuo Lu Wei, and stinky tofu which is a national obsession in Taiwan. Some of the food stalls have been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand. In addition to the above, Taiwan is packed with many interesting places to visit. By the way, some travellers enjoy visiting Taiwan during the winter months with a pleasant temperature. Taiwan PAGE • 23 THAILAND 0ne2...FLY! magazine ISSUE DEC 23-JAN 24 Dihua Street Dihua Street is considered to be Taipei’s oldest street and has been the main avenue of Dadaocheng neighbourhood since the 1850s. The charming bygone atmosphere still lingers on today in the well-preserved buildings dating to the Qing Dynasty and its mix of stores offering traditional products such as Chinese medicine, quaint tea houses as well as sweet modern cafés, craft shops and boutiques. Make sure to visit the century-old Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple, believed to grant wishes related to love and personal relationships. Allocate around two hours for exploring Dihua Street and we recommend even more if you enjoy strolling around art shops, temples and parks, and stopping for street food and cafés. It’s a good idea to hit the place in the afternoon. A bit further away sits Dadaocheng Wharf, a nice spot to imbue sunsets with New Taipei on the other side of the river as a backdrop. The food zone is also the latest check-in spot for teenagers with huge containers converted into food trucks. Do not miss a chance to watch the stupendous fireworks which take place here, such as for New Year. Tamsui The Tamsui neighbourhood is Taiwan’s northern seaside district with a former prominent port. Biking is one option for getting around here and it will enable you to fully enjoy the Tamsui River, the lush greenery of the park, the sun setting on the serene water, and working up an appetite on your way to the street food stalls on the riverbank. If you are here at the end of the year you must, of course, not miss the countdown fireworks! In 2022 the fireworks at Tamsui started at 8.22 pm and lasted for 13 minutes and 14 seconds, which left enough time to get to Taipei 101, the 101-storey skyscraper, for another set of fireworks at midnight. The Doraemon Exhibition 2023 Visit Taipei during 16 December 2023 and 7 April 2024, and you can see an additional attraction – the Doraemon Exhibition 2023 at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. The highlight of the immersive exhibition is a collection of original sketches and authentic drafts by author Fujiko F. Fujio, which is on loan from the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, as well as the immersive transformation of the cartoon on the ground for visitors to experience how it all took place. Fireworks for the New Year Countdown Taipei is one of the ten favourite Asian cities where people want to be for a new year countdown. Taipei City Hall organises concerts and activities from late evening until the countdown and Taipei 101, once the world’s tallest building from 2004 until 2010, is the perfect skyscraper for spectacular fireworks.24 PAGE • THAILAND 0ne2...FLY! magazine ISSUE DEC 23-JAN 24 Fly High Xiangshan – one of the best spots to watch the fireworks. However, you’ll need to walk up the hill in the afternoon to reserve a spot, and there is a risk whether the sky will be clear enough or not. Rainbow Riverside Park – located near Raohe Night Market, and recommended for those who’d like to enjoy a variety of local foods while also enjoying the fireworks. Song Shan Fu De Temple is also nearby where you can pay respects and wish for a prosperous new year. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall – a perfect spot to witness the magnificent fireworks but it does tend to get crowded. Songshou Square Park – another spot with an excellent view of the fireworks in the ambience of a park. It’s also important to note that the MRT will operate non-stop from 6.00 am of 31 December 2023 until 24.00 of 1 January 2024, so you will have no worries at all about commuting while enjoying the countdown festivities to the fullest. For a good view of the new year fireworks, follow the locals to any of these spots: • Keep all your receipts, as you may win the Taiwan Receipt Lottery and receive TWD 10 million (USD 308,000)! The announcement is made by the Ministry of Finance on the 25th of every odd month. 1 2 3 4 TRAVEL TIPS i • The top-up contactless EasyCard can be used to pay for most forms of transportation and car parks, the purchase of goods in convenience stores and vending machines, entrance fees to sports centres, amusement park and museums, and more. • If your arrival is in the morning, look out the airplane window 20 minutes before landing and you may get a sight of Penghu island with its heart shape.26 PAGE • THAILAND 0ne2...FLY! magazine ISSUE DEC 23-JAN 24 กองทัุ่น Fly Green เปี็นกองทัุ่นด้้าน สิ้้งแวด้ล่้อม่ทั่่ร้เร้ม่โด้ยสิ้ายการบ้นไทั่ยเว่ยต่เจ็ทั่ โด้ยม่่เปีาหม่ายสิ้้งสิุ้ด้ในการให้การสิ้นับสิ้นุน ด้้านการเง้นแก่โครงการแล่ะก้จกรรม่ด้้าน สิ้้งแวด้ล่้อม่ของม่้ล่น้ธั้สิ้่บนาคะเสิ้ถึ่ยรทั่ัว ปีระเทั่ศไทั่ย โด้ยม่้ล่น้ธั้สิ้่บนาคะเสิ้ถึ่ยรได้้ด้ำเน้น โครงการแล่ะก้จกรรม่เพิ่อปีกปีองแล่ะอนุรักษ์ ผู้่นปีาแล่ะสิ้ัต่ว์ปีาทั่่ใกล่้สิ้้ญพิันธัุ์อย่างมุ่่งม่ัน กองทัุ่น Fly Green ขอเช่้ญช่วนปีระช่าช่นแล่ะ บุคคล่ทั่ัวไปีบร้จาคเง้นให้กับโครงการเพิ่อ สิ้นับสิ้นุนก้จกรรม่ด้้านสิ้้งแวด้ล่้อม่ของม่้ล่น้ธั้ สิ้่บ นาคะเสิ้ถึ่ยร เพิ่อด้ำเน้นการปีกปีองปีาไม่้แล่ะ สิ้ัต่ว์ปีาทั่่ถึ้กคุกคาม่ต่่อไปี นับต่ังแต่่ก่อต่ังกองทัุ่น Fly Green ในปีี 2564 สิ้ายการบ้นไทั่ยเว่ยต่เจ็ทั่ปีระสิ้บความ่สิ้ำเร็จ Fly Green Fund บินมันใจ ใสุ่ใจสุิงแวัดีล้อัม กับ ‘กอังทุน Fly Green’ จากไทยเวัียต์เจ็ท ในการด้ำเน้นโครงการเพิ่อสิ้้งแวด้ล่้อม่ต่่าง ๆ ม่ากม่าย รวม่ถึึงก้จกรรม่ ‘Garbage Hunter’ ซึ่ึงเปี็นโครงการทั่่ม่่วัต่ถึุปีระสิ้งค์เพิ่อกำจัด้ขยะ จากสิ้ถึานทั่่ต่่าง ๆ ในปีระเทั่ศไทั่ย ก้จกรรม่ ‘Fly Green Charity Golf Day’ การแข่งขันกอล่์ฟี การกุศล่ครังแรกของสิ้ายการบ้นฯ โครงการ ‘Fly Green Metro Forest’ โครงการเพิ่อเพิ้ม่พิ่นทั่่ สิ้่เข่ยวในเขต่เม่่องใหญ่ในปีระเทั่ศไทั่ย ก้จกรรม่ ‘Vietjet Fly Green Charity Concert’ คอนเสิ้้ร์ต่ การกุศล่ทั่่จัด้ขึนเพิ่อสิ้ร้างความ่ต่ระหนักร้้ เก่ยวกับปีัญหาสิ้้งแวด้ล่้อม่แล่ะระด้ม่ทัุ่นจาก การจำหน่ายบัต่รคอนเสิ้้ร์ต่เพิ่อสิ้ม่ทั่บทัุ่นแก่ กองทัุ่น Fly Green แล่ะล่่าสิุ้ด้ งานว้งการกุศล่ ‘Fly Green Charity Run’ ซึ่ึงเปี็นงานว้งการกุศล่ ทั่่จัด้ขึนเปี็นครังแรกภายใต่้กองทัุ่น Fly Green ผ่้้โดิยสารสายการบิินไทยเวัียต้เจ็็ท สาม่ารถร่วัม่เป็นส่วันหนึงในการ สนับิสนุนกิจ็กรรม่เพื่่อสิงแวัดิล้อม่ ของม่้ลนิธิส่บินาคุะเสถียร โดิยบิริจ็าคุ แก่กองทุน Fly Green ผ่่านชี่องทาง ดิังนี บร้จาคผู้่านเว็บไซึ่ต่์ของสิ้ายการบ้น ไทั่ยเว่ยต่เจ็ทั่ ทั่่ www.vietjetair.com บร้จาคผู้่านกล่่องรับบร้จาค ณ เคาน์เต่อร์เช่็คอ้นสิ้ายการบ้น ไทั่ยเว่ยต่เจ็ทั่ทั่ัวปีระเทั่ศ บร้จาคขณะทั่ำการสิ้ำรองบัต่ร โด้ยสิ้ารสิ้ายการบ้นไทั่ยเว่ยต่เจ็ทั่ ทั่่เว็บไซึ่ต่์ www.vietjetair.com 1 2 3PAGE • 27 THAILAND 0ne2...FLY! magazine ISSUE DEC 23-JAN 24 Fly Green Fund is an environmental fund initiated by Thai Vietjet with an ultimate goal to provide financial supports to Seub Nakhasathien Foundation’s environmental projects and activities throughout Thailand.
