Embrace eco-friendly workout hacks – such as repurposing water bottles as weights, and converting old towels into yoga mats – as exercises in resourcefulness and waste reduction. Let's reshape our bodies and also the world, one rep at a time! SWEAT FOR CHANGE: A WORKOUT FOR YOU AND THE PLANET! 1. TURN OLD TIRES INTO PLYOMETRIC BOXES: To perform plyometric jumps for cardio and leg workouts, start by placing the old tire on a flat surface. Stand behind the tire, ensuring proper body alignment and balance. Begin with a slight bend in your knees, then explode upwards, using your arms for momentum. Land gently in the centre of the tire, absorbing the impact by bending your knees upon landing. 4. BACKPACKS AS WEIGHTED VESTS: Enhance bodyweight workouts with backpacks turned into weighted vests. Load the backpack with books or heavy items and wear it during exercises such as front lunges. Perform a front lunge by stepping forward, bending both knees and pushing through the front heel to return. The added weight will intensify the workout by engaging your leg muscles even more. 5. PILLOWCASES AS RESISTANCE BANDS: Elevate your squats with a creative twist. Loop a pillowcase around your legs, just above your knees, to create resistance during your squat exercises. As you lower into the squat, the pillowcase will provide added tension by engaging your glutes and thighs even more. This simple hack intensifies your squat routine, helping you build lower body strength and definition. 3. ROPE OR CLOTH FOR STRETCHING: Employ old ropes or cloth segments to enhance your stretching regimen. Create a knot in a rope and utilise it for assisted hamstring stretches. Wrap the rope around your foot and gently pull towards you to deepen the stretch, aiding flexibility and range of motion. 2. WINE BOTTLES AS DUMBBELLS: Repurpose empty wine bottles into DIY dumbbells by filling them with water or sand. With arms at your sides, grasp a wine bottle in each hand. Maintain a firm grip and curl your arms upward, engaging your biceps. Lower the bottles slowly to the starting position, focusing on controlled motions. Ensure the bottles are securely sealed to prevent any leaks during your workout. YOUR HEALTHY BODY 5-min exercise Illustrated by Fah AnuntasomboonGLOBAL WARMING AND HEAT STROKE / ISSUE_49 18 YOUR HEALTHY BRAIN In the know Global warming, driven by the planet’s increasing temperature, manifests a multitude of impacts on our world including significant consequences for the health of the general public. One of its notable effects is the disruption of suitable conditions for crop growth, leading to potential disruptions in food supply chains and indirect health implications for global populations. The direct health impact of an elevated temperature varies in severity, though the most common illness reported in news is heat stroke./ ISSUE_49 19 “According to NASA, the planet's average surface temperature in 2022 tied with 2015 as the fifth-warmest on record, and the past nine years have been the warmest since modern record-keeping started in 1880. Records show that planet Earth was around 1.11°C warmer in 2022 compared to the average in the 19th century. Climate change is leading to heightened occurrences of heat waves resulting in increased temperatures during both daytime and nighttime which, in turn, contribute to elevated levels of air pollution.” As warm-blooded mammals, the human body regulates its core temperature by the hypothalamus in the brain. Body thermoregulation operates by activating skin receptors and visceral organs to manage heat loss and maintain an average body temperature between 36.5–37.4°C. Body temperature control is achieved through processes such as conduction (the transfer of heat to a cooler object through direct contact), convection (the transfer of heat from the body's surface to the surrounding air circulation), evaporation (the vaporisation of sweat), and radiation. However, under high ambient temperatures and increased metabolic demands, heat transfer's primary mechanism is by evaporation of sweat. During exercise, the heart pumps more blood to meet the increased metabolic needs of our muscles. This redirects blood flow from our internal organs to the outer blood vessels near our skin, helping to cool the body. Although the amount of water lost through sweat may not seem like much, it can reduce the overall blood volume in circulation, potentially causing hypovolemia. This can further delay the body's ability to dissipate heat. When the production of heat in the body surpasses its ability to lose heat, the core temperature steadily rises, increasing the risk of heat- related illnesses. Extreme heat events can give rise to various heat-related conditions, with heat stroke being the most severe. Heat stroke transpires when the body's innate temperature regulation mechanisms falter, resulting in a rapid increase in body temperature. Recognising that specific population segments are at an elevated risk of succumbing to heat-related illnesses is essential. These vulnerable groups encompass children under 15 and older adults, particularly those aged 65 and above. Additionally, individuals with preexisting chronic conditions such as cardiac disease and diabetes mellitus, those recently recovering from illnesses, and those with skin abnormalities are also more susceptible. Furthermore, athletes, military personnel and outdoor workers face an increased risk due to the demands of their physical activities and prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Several other contributing factors can exacerbate the risk of heat- related illnesses. These factors include inadequate sleep, excessive clothing, lack of acclimatisation to high temperatures, obesity, preexisting dehydration, lack of adequate breaks to cool down, limited shelter or shade, high humidity levels, elevated ambient temperatures and insufficient access to water resources. It is worth noting that many of these risk factors are avoidable through proper preparation and preventive measures. Consequently, it is feasible to mitigate the occurrence of heat- related disorders through proactive strategies.Next >
