The study analysed the association between air pollution and bone health in over 3,700 people with a mean age of 35.7 years from 28 villages outside the city of Hyberabad in India and the results showed that exposure to ambient air pollution, particularly to fine particles, was associated with lower levels of bone mass – especially in spine and hip, which increases the risk to develop osteoporosis. POLLUTED AIR ALSO LINKED TO DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE We know that high levels of air pollution can have a negative impact on our body, however it’s not just our physical health that can be affected. Studies have found that air pollution substantially harms our mental health too. A team from University College London assessed data from 16 countries, examining evidence of links between air pollution and five mental health outcomes: depression, anxiety, bipolar, psychosis and suicide. It found that an increase of PM 2.5 of 10μg/m3 over long periods could increase the risk of depression by 10 percent. Additionally, short-term exposure to PM10 (larger particles of pollution, such as dust and smoke) over a three-day period appears to impact suicide risk by two percent for every 10μg/m3 increase. The researchers are quick to point out that their findings don’t necessarily indicate a causal relationship between air pollution and mental health issues, just that there appears to be a link. So even if you live in a highly-polluted area, you’re not predestined to develop depression or anxiety. 2% / ISSUE_27 12/ ISSUE_27 14 YOUR HEALTHY SOUL Lastest shopping guide Shopping is a therapy of sorts, and it gets better when it is done with care for the environment. Everybody knows PM 2.5 will have a negative short-term and long-term effect on health but it seems like the longer this problem persists, the less the public is aware of how to cope with it. Why we cannot ignore this problem? How dangerous is PM 2.5? What can you do to protect yourself and your family?/ ISSUE_27 19 Human Hair PM 10 PM 2.5 Fine Beach Sand What is PM? “PM” is the abbreviation for particulate matter (also called particle pollution). It is widespread air pollution which consists of a mixture of physical and chemical substances (solid and liquid) that varies with location. It can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals, allergens and microbial compounds. There are many sizes of PM, some of which are big, or dark, enough to be visible to the naked eyes, while some are very tiny and need an electron microscope to be detected. PM 2.5 is fine particulate with a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometres. When compared with the size of a human hair, which is about 70 micrometres in diameter, PM 2.5 is approximately 30 times smaller! What are the sources of PM? Primary PM is emitted directly from combustion engines, solid fuel (coal, lignite, heavy oil and biomass) combustion for energy production, erosion of roads, fields, fire smoke and other industrial activities (building, mining, cement manufacture, ceramic, bricks and smelting). Secondary PM is formed in the atmosphere by complex reactions of chemical precursors such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which are pollutants emitted by power plants, industries and automobiles. Secondary PM is mostly found in fine PM. What is PM?Next >
