KNOW IT ALL Scientists have confirmed that a person’s IQ can be predicted by studying their DNA i.e. by conducting tests using a swab of saliva or a drop of blood. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh and Harvard University have discovered 538 new genes linked to brain power, using data from UK Biobank and comparing DNA variants from more than 240,000 people. Their analysis also identified 187 regions of the human genome that are associated with thinking skills. Some of these genes are also linked to other biological processes including life spans. FACE SHAPE IS IN THE GENES Our DNA determines what we look like, including our facial features, and a team of researchers have now identified 15 genes that are key to shaping our faces. The team looked at 2,329 people of European ancestry whose faces had been modelled in 3D, allowing the team to match them with similar characteristics. The team found 38 genes that might affect facial features, but only 15 of these were confirmed when they replicated the study using another 1,719 people. The potential applications for this research are varied, ranging from facial reconstructive surgery to crime scene investigation. The research shows promising future applications, however it is in its infancy. Advertorial / ISSUE_16 15/ ISSUE_16 16 YOUR HEALTHY SOUL Lastest shopping guide The ubiquity of wearability has been increasing in recent years.
