One of the quieter ports there offers a river boat trip oared by local ferry women in traditional clothes. The highlight of the river trip comes as the boat enters Kato-su, where 12 small bridges cross prettily across the brook. Within a short distance from the river lies the traditional Aiyu Sake Brewery , established 209 years ago. It’s a thrill indeed to witness the centuries-old technique of producing sake by hand, though some processes have ITAKO 2002, the area occupies over 40,000 sqm (equivalent to the size of the Tokyo Dome) and serves as a fresh market for the most tempting locally-grown vegetables and fruits which are barcoded for their traceability – so in addition to meeting the farmers face-to-face, one can also see what soil and fertiliser were used on the farm! This guarantees that the produce offered here are in tip-top condition. Itako is famous for Dorayaki, and at Michi-no-Eki Itako there is a live station where fresh Dorayaki with different tasty fillings are prepared. The market is so successful that on an annual basis it generates over JPY 700 million income, of which over JPY 200 million is earned from selling vegetables and fruits alone. Premium sake here is typically priced at JPY 4,100 for a 720 ml bottle. For a refreshing outdoor activity, Suigo Kenmin no Mori , the park, fits the bill with its lanes surrounded by foliage. Since its opening in 2006, the park has been a magnet for locals and travellers alike who come to relax, picnic and enjoy outdoor activities.
