Similar to the muscles in the rest of your body, your face has muscles that can be toned and strengthened through regular exercises. These can provide remarkable results comparable to surgical procedures and include improved skin tone, reduced visible lines and a perfected smile. Start incorporating these convenient 5-minute exercises into your daily routine for a captivating smile! FACIAL EXERCISES FOR THE PERFECT SMILE THE SMILE LINE ERASER This exercise helps to relax and stretch facial muscles, which will help prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines around your mouth. To begin, pucker your lips as dramatically as you can while sucking your cheeks in and rolling your lips. In this position, try to smile and then hold it until you begin to feel a mild aching sensation in your facial muscles. Release and repeat. To avoid straining your face, do this exercise only once a day. THE INCREMENTAL SMILE EXERCISE This exercise helps you work the muscles that control your happy expressions, including the muscles used when you smile. Start by sitting or standing in front of a mirror with your face and lips relaxed. Stretch your mouth corners widely to the sides without opening your lips, and hold for 10 seconds. Then part your lips to expose the edges of your teeth, and hold for 10 seconds. Open your mouth wider to expose half of your teeth and hold for 10 seconds. Finally, smile widely to show as much of your teeth as you can, and once again hold for 10 seconds. Then reverse the process until you reach the start of this exercise. THE LIP PULL This exercise helps to improve the shape and tone of the facial muscles and make your smile more symmetrical. To do the lip pull, sit or stand with your spine straight and your chin up. Push your lower lip over your top lip and smile widely. Hold for 5 seconds. Repeat several times. THE SILLY RABBIT This facial exercise will help you tone your cheek muscles as well as improve your ability to control and adjust your smile. You can do this exercise with or without a mirror. To start, make sure your lips and mouth are in a relaxed position. Then stretch your mouth as widely as possible into an ear-to-ear grin, and start wiggling your nose like a rabbit until your cheek muscles engage. Hold for 10 seconds, relax your facial muscles, and then repeat the process 10 times for the best results. Although the lifespan of humans has been getting noticeably longer, the typical aging process has not been slowing significantly. It causes numerous changes in the human body including the oral cavity and as oral health has been proven to have a crucial role in one’s overall health status including psychological state, and quality of life. Oral care during your silver years is therefore an aspect of healthcare that you should be concerned about./ ISSUE_48 17 TYPICAL ORAL HEALTH ISSUES FOUND IN SENIORS INCLUDE: 1. TOOTH LOSS: As one ages, the magnitude of dental and oral health problems increases with the body's aging process and, at the same time, the ability to care of oneself declines. Without proper routine dental care, seniors can experience tooth decay and gum disease which may finally lead to loss of their teeth, which could cause more complex problems not only in their treatment but also with regards to well- being and appearance. 2. DRY MOUTH: Decreased saliva production occurs naturally in seniors and an additional common cause of a dry mouth is the side-effect of medication, especially polypharmacy (using more than five medications). The symptoms of drug- induced dry mouth include hypofunction of the saliva gland and xerostomia (subjective feeling of dry mouth). Consequences of dry mouth are difficulty with eating and swallowing, dental caries, taste disorder, painful mouth soreness, poor sleep, bad breath, distress and oral fungal infection. Medications associated with dry mouth is listed in Table 1. TABLE 1: The medication types and their names known to cause dry mouth 3. PERIODONTITIS (GUM DISEASE): Periodontitis is chronic gum inflammation with an accumulation of dental plaque. Multiple factors cause this disease, such as age-related deteriorated periodontal tissue, overly aggressive brushing or flossing, lower immunity and dry mouth. The risk factors of periodontitis are smoking, diabetes and other systemic diseases. Severe gum disease results in root caries, tooth loss and an adverse impact on quality of life. It is also associated with increased systemic inflammation, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, malnutrition and decreased physical function. 4. ROOT DECAY: Root decay caused by receding gums result in exposure of tooth roots with no enamel protection, making them more susceptible to decay. 5. ORAL CANCER: Statistically, oral cancer (of the oral cavity, tongue, lips and oropharynx) rates as one of the top ten cancers in the world. The risk of oral cancer increases with age due to oral mucosa becoming more vulnerable to toxic substances. Early detection of oral cancer with regular oral examinations is crucial to ensure a timely intervention. Oral health directly impacts your ability to chew, swallow and speak correctly and therefore any dental or oral problems can cause poor nutrition, lower immunity and the increased risk of systemic health conditions including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory infections and a risk of systemic infections especially in older adults and people with underlying disorders. Unhealthy oral and dental conditions may also affect communication, lower self- confidence and cause psychological distress./ ISSUE_48 18 YOUR HEALTHY BRAIN In the know References 1. A GOOD ORAL HEALTHCARE PLAN FOR SENIORS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Regular dental visits as preventive care every six months to detect oral issues early and prevent complications. Using proper oral hygiene techniques such as brushing, flossing and self-evaluation. In certain cases involving physical limitations, electric toothbrushes, specially- designed toothbrushes and flossing aids will help overcome physical challenges. A senior with dry mouth can manage the issue to an extent by sipping water frequently, chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free lozenges, increasing fluid intake and use artificial saliva. To stop worsening the symptoms, they should be encouraged to avoid caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and dry or hard-to-chew foods. As some medicines contribute to dry mouth, healthcare providers may review the senior’s medication record to assess the severity of side effects and search for alternative therapies which may alleviate the problem. In conclusion, particular attention is needed in order to care for the oral and dental health of those in their silver years but although seniors have a higher risk for oral diseases, most of these are preventable and manageable with early treatment. Oral care for seniors should therefore focus on a preventive approach and by recognising and addressing oral health concerns early on, seniors will be able to preserve their oral health, quality of life and smiles well into their silver years.Next >
