Humans also consider their heart to be the source of emotions that can affect their mental and physical health, positively or detrimentally. It would not be overrated to say, then, that having a ‘heart of health’ is vital for all of us. To celebrate World Heart Day, on 29th September, the World Heart Federation has launched a campaign to raise awareness of heart health by asking the public at large to make a promise i.e. a promise to eat more healthily, to get more active, and to say no to smoking. This issue of Health Brings Wealth expands on that promise and offers more relevant information to help you take good care of your heart and attain the promise you make for a ‘heart of health’. DR. Recognising this risk, a team at the University of California Los Angeles has launched a computer programme that’s able to predict heart failure. Trees of Predictors (ToPs) uses 53 data points to predict how long people with heart failure will live, either with or without a heart transplant. Using machine-learning, the algorithm was trained and tested on a huge database of patients; the more it learns, the more accurate it becomes. The team hopes that this approach would allow ToPs to provide personalised risk analyses for individual prospective recipients, rather than the one-size-fits-all approach of previous machine-learning models. FIX BROKEN HEARTS WITH STEM CELLS Scientists in Japan now have official permission to treat people suffering from heart disease with cutting-edge stem cell technology, which involves inducing pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs) that are derived from skin or blood cells and then transmogrified back to their basic, precursor state. The Japanese health ministry gave medical practitioners the go-ahead to graft IPSC-generated tissues – each containing 100 million heart muscle cells – onto disease-riddled human hearts. Previous work on pigs healed their damaged heart tissue, but not through integration. Instead, they released chemicals that induced the growth and regeneration within the damaged cells. ญี่ปุ่นอนุญาตให้แพทย์ทดลองใช้สเต็มเซลล์ ในการรักษาผู้ป่วยโรคหัวใจได้แล้ว โดยกรณี ของการรักษาหัวใจ จะต้องใช้เซลล์ต้นกาเนิด (IPSCs) ซึ่งได้มาจากเซลล์ผิวหนังหรือเลือด นามาดัดแปลงให้เข้าสู่สถานะเริ่มต้น แล้ว เอามาสร้างเป็นเนื้อเยื่อเพื่อปลูกถ่ายลงบน หัวใจของผู้ป่วยที่มีปัญหา ในการทดลอง ที่เคยทากับหมูพบว่าสเต็มเซลล์ดังกล่าว สามารถซ่อมแซมเนื้อเยื่อหัวใจที่เป็นโรค ได้จริง แต่ไม่ใช่ด้วยการผสานของเนื้อเยื่อ หากแต่เป็นการปล่อยสารเคมีบางอย่าง ที่ทาให้เซลล์ที่เสียหายซ่อมแซมตัวเอง ให้กลับมาสมบูรณ์ได้อีกครั้ง/ ISSUE_18 15 On the coastal gem of Phu Quoc sits JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, with its marvellous architecture and refined touch of French colonial arts that have been curated by world-famous Bill Bensley. Combining recreation and a theme of education, this resort’s design narrates the fictional story of Lamarck University, inspired by influential French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Bensley is careful to convey his messages, and takes guests on a journey filled by exquisite details. The vast resort area is separated into zones, each of which is named after an academic department, and are connected by Rue de Lamarck where Hoi An style shop- houses are lined up. Pink Pearl is the finest French dining experience on this paradise island. It is named after Madame Pearl Collins, the second wife of Lamarck University’s first Dean, who was well-known among Phu Quoc crowds for her impressive gifts in the arts and cuisine, and as a lady who threw terrific parties. Her graceful Advertorial A DAZZLING TALE TO BE TOLD sprightliness is reflected all over the wondrous Pink Pearl. Tucked away in Sukhumvit Road Soi 10, Chan & Yupa Tearoom is embraced by a green garden and natural décor which puts guests at ease immediately. As they proceed inside via the pebble lane, the white building ahead of them with a warm, yet classic British ambience hints that it offers more than just tea and a place to sit down. Most of the tables are positioned along the transparent ceiling- to-floor wall, allowing guests to fully soak in the natural ambience. Chan & Yupa Tearoom 12 Sukhumvit 10, Klongtoey Nue, Wattana, Bangkok T. 0-2252-6601 Open daily from 7 a.m.-10.30 p.m. As this venue positions itself as a tearoom, their signature dish cannot be anything else but an Afternoon Tea Set! - featuring to-die-for Scones served with Fresh Cream Cheese and Homemade Strawberry Jam, Salmon Roll, Sandwich Croissant, Fruit Tart, Crème Brûlée, Macarons and other delicious bites. Then, do not miss the Pork Spare Ribs Teriyaki that is cooked for 48 hours for perfect tenderness and flavour, paired with fried mashed potato. Their homemade super-thin pizzas, loaded with toppings, are ordered frequently for a good reason! As for something Thai, the flavoursome Fried Sea Bass with Green Mango Salad and Herbal Fried Rice will not let you down, nor the ever-popular Pad Thai. We fell in love with the unique Orange Mint Iced Tea with Aloe Vera, a great thirst-quencher of Thai tea, lemon syrup, aloe vera bits that is topped with orange and mint ice-cream.
