magazine ISSUE FEB-MAR 24 Fly High 7 SASSY SPOTS IN SHANGHAI TO CHECK-IN The Bund – Heart of The “Paris of The East” Wai Tan, on the banks of Huangpu River, used to be the site of a prominent trading port. It is presently best known by travellers as “The Bund” and is where western old-world buildings, many Art Deco and others Renaissance, Baroque or other, sit side by side. These buildings, aged over a century, line the 1.5-kilometre- long waterfront and mostly belong to long- established financial institutions and erstwhile Chinese trading companies, and more recently have been housing restaurants, clothing boutiques and department stores. Planning a trip to China requires curating one’s specific interests carefully, as the country covers a vast territory and repertoire of cultural heritage from the natural to the manmade, from ancient to modern. The city of Shanghai alone, however, could fit the bill since it is an icon of “new” China in many aspects such as economy, trade, finance, investment, culture, fashion and tourism. It has long been dubbed the “Paris of the East” for good reason! Skyscanner’s Travel Trends 2024 report also reveals the increasing prioritisation of cultural exploration for travellers. Shanghai offers an abundance of this, and wins the heart of its numerous visitors with its charm that weaves the old with the new effortlessly, such as with its old-world brick buildings and skyscrapers made of steel. PAGE • 23 THAILAND 0ne2...FLY! magazine ISSUE FEB-MAR 24 Visitors should take some time to observe the differences between the old side of the city where The Bund sits, and the modern side of the city across the river with its skyscrapers and Oriental Pearl Tower as the landmark. For a remarkable view of both sides, start on The Bund side and proceed to The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel which leads to the modern side where Oriental Pearl Tower awaits, then soak up the view of the old side. Lujiazui district, aka the “Wall Street of China” Second to the Burj Khali Tower Observation Desk (in Dubai) in terms of height, Oriental Pearl Tower is 468 metres high. It’s located in Lujiazui district, aka the “Wall Street of China”. The tower features several highlights for visitors, most popular is the main observation deck sitting 263 metres high with its circular glass floor that allows visitors to have a top-down panorama of the city. For history enthusiasts, Shanghai History Museum is worth a visit with its renovated 9,800-square-metre space and over 1,000 artefacts on display. The district of Lujiazui also houses Shanghai Tower, Jinmao Tower which is both an office building and a department store under one roof, the Grand Hyatt Shanghai which was once the tallest hotel in the world, and other office buildings, hotels and stores. Last but not least, the Shanghai World Financial Center sits here with its viewpoint docks on the 94th, 97th and 100th floors. If you take the skywalk at Ming Zhu roundabout, you’ll find the gigantic Disney Shop with its iconic clock tower where Disney characters perform every day during 5.55 - 6.00 pm! Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street – Shanghai’s Busiest Shopping Paradise The road dates back 170 years, however it was in the early 1900s that it became established as Shanghai’s first place for traders to buy and sell goods. It gradually evolved into a more sophisticated shopping paradise with, among boutiques, Shanghai first department store and finally, in 2000, one kilometre of the whole road was transformed into a pedestrian zone. Often called the “Fifth Avenue or Champs- Élysées of the East”, it remains one of Shanghai’s busiest pedestrian streets and today comprises of hotels, luxury brand stores, restaurants, cafés and more. Do look out for the signs that show Shanghai’s first-ever electric pole in 1882, and China Reality Co, one of the oldest and most powerful real estate firms in Shanghai. Shanghai Natural History Museum – One of China’s Newest Even if you think you’re not a natural history fan or do not have any kids on the trip, Shanghai Natural History Museum will still win your heart from the first step you take in it. Relocated to a stunning 44,517 square-metre building with a 4D theatre and discovery centre in Jing’an Sculpture Park in 2015, visitors cannot 24 PAGE • THAILAND 0ne2...FLY! magazine ISSUE FEB-MAR 24 Fly High Zhapulu Bridge, the viewpoint many consider to be the most romantic in Shanghai, especially at night when the city is lit up. Xintiandi Street with its Shikumen, or old shophouse-style residences. Heavenly Jin Restaurant, a European-Japanese-Chinese fusion restaurant that’s the world’s highest restaurant in a building according to Guinness World Records. Dining on the 120th floor will surely be a meal to remember! Stops for those in love Shanghai is a romantic city and those travelling with their sweetheart should not miss a surprise stop at these places: help but get excited when exploring natural history through the ten permanent exhibition halls displaying over 10,000 artifacts from all seven continents. The largest exhibit is a 140-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton of Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis, which is over four stories high. The museum has a total collection of over 250,000 specimens which can be categorised into: plants, paeleontology, geology and humanity, and include 700 specimens of the Stone Age. There are rare species which cannot be found outside China such as a Yellow River mammoth, Yangtze alligator, giant salamander and a giant panda. One needs at least 2-3 hours to enjoy the museum, the exciting architecture of the building (both indoor and outdoor) and the sculptures in the park. The entrance fee is 30 Yuan. Yuyuan Garden on Yuyuan Old Street Yuyuan Garden, a classical garden dating back 400 years to the Ming Dynasty, is one of Shanghai’s bygone highlights for all visitors, even the regulars. We recommended to hit Yuyuan Garden before dusk in order to experience the garden that is adorned with pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds and cloisters in the most beautiful and romantic light. The exit of the garden leads to Yuyuan Old Street which is filled with restaurants, classic tea houses, cafés and souvenir shops, and where you’ll find the ever- popular Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant that opened in 1990. Shanghai Disneyland – Asia’s largest Disneyland Another must-visit when in Shanghai is Shanghai Disneyland. Not only it is the largest Disneyland in Asia, its Cinderella Castle is also the world’s largest! Zootopia is the newest zone in the park, while TRON is the highlight of Tomorrowland. Don’t miss Disney Pixar Toy Story Land, Adventure Isle With Roaring Rapids, Soaring Over the Horizon that would take you around the world, Treasure Cove with Pirates of the Caribbean and, last but not least, Fantasyland and the Garden of Imagination where you’ll find the castle, carousel and Dumbo ride. Jing’an Temple – the ancient temple predating Shanghai If you have to choose just one temple to visit in Shanghai, Jing’an Temple is it. Built in the year 247, over 1,700 years ago and thus predating even Shanghai city, the temple features exquisite architecture and was put on the national heritage protection list since 1983. The highlights of this temple are: the Siddhattha Gotama Buddha craved out of white marble, the biggest in China with a height of 3.78 metres; the Quan Yin carved from camphor wood, six metres in height; a bronze bell that was cast in the Ming Dynasty; and the Lucky Jade Stone that you should touch to be blessed with good luck. In summary, Shanghai offers a vast repertoire of cultural heritage from the natural to the manmade, from ancient to modern, and always wins the hearts of travellers, both first-time and repeat, looking to fulfil their itch for cultural exploration.
